Some Things Are Better "Hot," Laundry Is Not One of Them.

Water heating consumes about 90% of the energy it takes to operate a washing machine, according to Energy Star. Consider washing your laundry only in cold water. The Sierra Club says "each household that makes the switch to cold-water washing eliminates about 1,600 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions a year."

56% of the energy used in the average home is for heating and cooling, and adjusting your thermostat (lower in winter, higher in summer) saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Next time you reach for the thermostat consider adding a layer of clothing or taking one off.
